Interview: Schulz Army Catches Up with Beat Service

Schulz Army had the opportunity to speak to Madis Sillamo AKA Beat Service during a recent Coldharbour Night in Los Angeles.  Beat Service is known for some of his top tracks on Coldharbour Recordings like “Fortuna”, “Outside” and his remix of “Nothing Without Me” also called by fans “Stalker Anthem”.  He recently has joined Schulz Music Group and is starting to be included on the Coldharbour Night lineups.

Schulz Army: You’re from Estonia, travelled half way around the world to get here. Is it worth it?
Beat Service: Absolutely! You cannot compare traveling around the world to a 9 to 5 job. It’s my dream come true job! It’s 200% worth it.

Schulz Army: What are your influences in trance music?
Beat Service: I started out as a mainstream DJ back in 1999 and I did it for about 5 or 6 years. I was listening to German trance like Kai Tracid and VooDoo & Serrano. I think that Paul van Dyk and Gouryella (who actually included Ferry Corsten) were my first influences. But back then I was listening to this music but I couldn’t play it out because the crowd demanded commercial stuff, so I was a commercial DJ. I was actually true to trance already, but it took me a while. So yeah influences, absolutely Ferry Corsten, Gouryella, System F, everything from Ferry’s earlier days are my absolute favorites. And Armin.

Schulz Army: Congrats on the release of another great track, “Undercover”.
Beat Service: We released it on a Monday and by Friday it was 13, and hoping to see it on the top 10. This is probably one of my last singles to come because I am working on my album. I am slowing down the singles production. I am going to focus on my album which is going to be released around May or June. It’s exciting.
Schulz Army: That is exciting! That’s a lot of tracks.
Beat Service: Yeah, 14 tracks. I am thinking I can have 50/50, vocal tracks and instrumental tracks. Let’s see how it goes. It is a work in progress. You never know what’s going to happen. I am extremely excited. I have so many talented singers on my album. I can’t mention them. Yea, it’s going to be a big one, absolutely!

Schulz Army: You’re now a key part of Coldharbour Night.
Beat Service: I think so!
Schulz Army: How did you originally connect with Markus Schulz and Coldharbour?
Beat Service: Markus was one of the first DJs that supported my music. It happened back in 2007 with a track called “Nectar”. I signed it with a label from Romania, Ask4 Records. Markus picked it up and played it out. And I thought, this could be something for me, my path for the future. I love Markus… he’s my hero! He’s a good guy!
Schulz Army: And thanks to him we know your music! What sets Coldharbour Night apart from when you’re doing your own headlining shows?
Beat Service: The music I play is pretty much the same. I consider myself a big part of the Coldharbour team. It doesn’t matter if it is a Coldharbour Night or a solo night for me, I always stand up for the Coldharbour sound. Coldharbour is the one for me even though I have my own label, we do work together. We license each other’s tracks. It’s like a family thing.

Beat Service has been to Canada 10 times or more to places like Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal and each time the crowd has managed to surprise him, “They have a really good crowd.” He says that, “My best memories are definitely from Montreal. Last year I had a gig at Bal en Blanc with 15,000 people. It was amazing being there with Markus, Ferry, Armin. You’re there with your all time favorite DJs.”  Beat Service was recently back in Montreal having celebrated his first New Year’s Eve gig as a DJ at Circus Afterhours. In the past he had always spent New Year’s eve with his family. He also was excited about his recent debut show in Toronto that was at Toika. Beat Service has several upcoming shows in Canada planned in Ottawa and Edmonton.

New Music Review: M.I.K.E. – The Motive E.P.

Belgian producer M.I.K.E. is responsible for some of the most iconic moments in trance music, whether it is under his main alias, or the alter egos of Push or Plastic Boy. Fresh from contributing to Markus Schulz’s Buenos Aires ’13 compilation with Before Dawn, he presents his first E.P. of originals for Coldharbour Recordings with three tracks in his unique style.

“The Motive” is the first track on this E.P and what a way to start. This is such a driven track by M.I.K.E. Upon first listen it just engages your ears from start to finish. The mid section of this track is such an ear burner and  will only engage with the audience even more. After this great synth it leads right back into the driving energy that will for sure keep people moving the whole track.

“Spacesuit” is what I like to call a hair raiser. This a very deep and dark track. The melody is subtle at points but creeps in at the right moments to send that ever lasting chill up and down your spine. The way the mid section of this track leads into the last-minute and a half its outright perfection. After listening to this track and the previous you can really get a good grasp onto how talented and how much of a range M.I.K.E. has to offer.

To finish off this great E.P. the last track is “Mass Freedom”. You really get the M.I.K.E. sound we all know in this track. As you take the six-minute journey you can almost vision a huge crowd of people with their hands up embracing the everlasting sounds in this track. The numerous sounds incorporated into this track just fit perfectly and the flow in incredible.

M.I.K.E. did a great job with this E.P. and I really enjoyed every track. I played these tracks at my own show on Saturday night and the crowd reaction was exactly what I expected, phenomenal. I think the crowd favorite of the night was “Spacesuit” or “The Motive” but I thoroughly enjoyed incorporating all three into my set. These tracks really come to life over a professional sound system.

New Music Review: Klauss Goulart – Absolute Chaos E.P.

It’s a welcome return to a familiar face for regular Coldharbour Recordings followers. Klauss Goulart carves an E.P. full of grooves, energy and catchy melodies. With previous bangers under his belt such as “Turbulence” and “No Man’s Land”, Klauss Goulart presents his first work for the label in over two years.

The first track on this E.P. is “Absolute Chaos”. This track off the bat starts with a nice solid beat to draw you in before fizzling out and turning into a driven mid section. The thing that really brought this together for me personally was the hollow knocking sound overlaying the synth, a very nice touch. The last half of this track has a very big room sound. When I dropped this song at my last show the magic happened all through out the track, but the last-minute is when the dance floor erupted. Klauss is right on track with this song and it came together perfectly.

Next track is “Legions (Original Mix)” which will catch the attention of the big room lovers, with a tough rugged bassline and an unrelenting melody boasting plenty of power. I have to say, playing this at a venue on a professional sound system sounds amazing. This track is the definition of a driving dance beat. It kept the club goers moving and smiling when “Legions” was played during my set. Klauss also throws in a true trance fell at the end of the track which shows how much talent is within him. Not only do I see “Legions” as one of my favorites, but I see this song providing many smiles for crowds in the near future. Once again great work!

The last track on this E.P. “Nayana (Original Mix)” has the most true trance feel for me. Such a great way to showcase that Klauss has so many aspects of blissful sound to give. The first time I heard this track was during Global DJ Broadcast and I feel in love immediately. This track has my favorite build of any on the E.P.  This is what I like to call a “Hands Up” song. So many melodic harmonies just make you want to close your eyes and disappear into trance heaven. I can only hope to hear this song at a festival to get the true feel of what a song like this can do to a crowd. I actually closed my show last night with this song and it felt like everyone was amazed with the sound and the heart put into this track.

The Absolute Chaos E.P. is a great showcase of all the amazing talent that Klauss Goulart has. This E.P. I believe covers almost every sound of great trance there is. “Nayana” is my personal favorite but with these three tracks its hard to pick.

Take a listen below and be sure to purchase the Absolute Chaos E.P. on Beatport or iTunes.

New Release Review: KhoMha – Hydra E.P.

KhoMha remains as one of the most exciting new talents of dance music and the year 2013 will have provided the Colombian wonder with plenty of memories. The Hydra E.P. rounds off an incredible 12 months for Mr. Roberto Alzate Pasos. With several Coldharbour Nights before the year rounds out, he isn’t finished on his pursuit of ascension just yet.

“Hydra” is a good track from the get-go. With a nice initial build, this track goes into a minimal preview of the end of the track. The synth sound in particular is very  inspiring. It’s what I like to call a “hands up”  sound and after one listen you can understand why. The second build in this track is where it really started to happen for me. After the drop you can hear the original line from the first portion of the track with a big room sound added. Overall I would say this is a solid track by KhoMha.

The next track on E.P. is “Drummer”. This track is a very driving, with a sound that you just want to hear on an impressive festival sound system. Again, KhoMha impresses with another great mid line to this track. The musical engineering going on here is quite impressive. KhoMha makes musical masterpieces like this really come to life with his never-ending twists that will keep drawing you in for another listen. I have to admit, I listened to this track a few times and each time I heard something different that made the track better. I see this becoming the base for some great trance remixes.

Now on to the last track “Kadence”, which is one of my personal favorites on this E.P. From the beginning this track has festival and club written all over it. This is one of those tracks, that when played the crowd will just erupt. The first 60 seconds of this track is the definition of what a driving beat is. When the mid synth kicks in you can’t help but to smile when you here the magic happening in your ears. Once that drive is over, “Kadence” kicks back in with a similar beat as to the first minute but with a more hollowed out punching sound. I see this track becoming a staple at many festivals and clubs as a go to trance track.

This E.P. is perfect for every listener. No matter what you are looking for it can be found in the Hydra E.P. I played each of these tracks at my show last night and the crowd reaction was very good. The two tracks that seemed to hit it off the most was “Kadence” and “Drummer”.

Great job on the Hydra E.P. KhoMha!

New Release Review: Fisherman & Hawkins – Virus and Antidote E.P.

Dutch duo Isaac Vissers and Rob Koopmans have been responsible for some of Coldharbour Recordings’ outstanding moments over the past couple of years. After a grand entrance with Nightshift, they ascended to even greater heights with Apache. Now leading the way is Virusa track which may be familiar to trance goers who attended Markus’ solo sets throughout the summer season.

This track can be summed up as pure bliss! From the very first time you hear it, you are on a journey. The melodic highs will draw you into the sounds hiding within. Mid way through, the track takes a nice turn and presents itself with hard-hitting lows and that great build we all desire. At this point, I have to admit I wanted to get out my chair and start dancing.

Fisherman and Hawkins really did a nice job in starting subtle, and evolving the sound and beat all the way to the ending of Virus. The build throughout this track is perfect, about every 30 seconds or so you will hear a little more added to the original line. I have to say, the real magic happens in the last half of the track.

I will definitely be playing this at one of my upcoming shows and I am sure it will make the club goers as happy as I was to hear it!

The second track in the E.P. release is Antidote and you cannot help but to notice the long and light build. To me this means one thing, a hard-hitting combination of highs and lows is in the near future. When the drop kicks in on this track you notice the very festival sound qualities it has. Antidote is definitely one of those tracks catered to a large, powerful and clear sound system with a crowd full of people ready to party to trance.

By mid track when the synth sound begins, you can almost picture thousands of hands in the sky waiting for that hard kick to come back. It does, but for just a moment. It still has the nice qualities of the first half, but begins to taper a little earlier in the track than I thought it would have.

Overall I would say this is a pretty good track by the duo, but I also see this track as a remixer’s dream.

Both tracks are now available on Beatport and can be purchased here.

Interview: Coldharbour Artists Grube & Hovsepian and KhoMha

On a Saturday night in Los Angeles Suzanne Welker Jurgens from the Schulz Army had the chance to sit down in the green room at Avalon to talk to Tim Grube, Mike Hovsepian and KhoMha about Coldharbour no longer being under Armada, Coldharbour Nights, the DJ Mag Top 100 poll, kandi bracelets, the EDM explosion and more. Grube & Hovsepian are two of the driving forces at the Coldharbour studios, relative newcomer KhoMha has been KhoMhatizing crowds at every chance.

When a lot of people hear the name Coldharbour they think Markus Schulz but a Coldharbour Night is more than just the Unicorn Slayer. As Mike Hovsepian put it, “The Coldharbour Night concept is basically three acts, Grube & Hovsepian, KhoMha or Beat Service or Mr. Pit.”

“You get the old Coldharbour sound through us opening up the night and it’s just a nice little build throughout the night. And that’s what we do with the formula for Coldharbour Night,” Tim Grube said. “We originally did Dallas but these major cities are nice too. All these cities just blow up, it’s amazing.”

One of the highlights of a Markus Schulz open to close set is the journey he takes the dance floor on by building the night into a mid set and then closing it out and these nights follow the same formula. Grube & Hovsepian open followed by KhoMha and then trance to close the night with Beat Service or Mr Pit.

Suzanne Welker Jurgens interviewing KhoMha, Mike Hovsepian & Tim Grube at Avalon in Los Angeles
Suzanne Welker Jurgens interviewing KhoMha, Mike Hovsepian & Tim Grube at Avalon in Los Angeles

Heading into 2014 dance music continues to grow in popularity and embrace new audiences, the talk of a bubble that could exist but as Mike Hovsepian says, “Embrace it, live in the moment.”

“If EDM is blowing up in the states it’s a good thing,” Tim Grube said. “Because we’re able to explore other cities that we’ve haven’t been able to before, because it’s been all over the radio and people are getting familiar with the sound. As DJs it’s pretty good. It’s really good for us.”

“We play towns we’d never think about playing three or four years ago, like Fresno which we played with KhoMha and that’s not known for EDM,” said Mike Hovsepian. “Norfolk, we were there. KhoMha is going to be there. These aren’t EDM towns, they’re embracing it, they want it and the promoters are giving it to them.”

We asked Mike Hovsepian about the acronym EDM and he said, “I don’t get why people make it a big deal. So EDM, it’s like Electronic Dance Music. It defines all of the genres. I see people arguing about it saying ‘no it’s trance, don’t call it EDM’. Who cares! It is what it is.”

DJ Mag Top 100 2013When speaking about popularity the DJ Mag Top 100 poll immediately comes to mind. Tim Grube spoke about its relevance and he said, “It’s going to be around. It’s not going to end this year, it’s not going to end next year, it is going to be around for a while.”

“I think it is more important to the smaller guys to get voted in,” Mike said. “Because that in effect helps you get booked. Because some promoters do book based off of the DJ mag. I think fans should vote for the smaller guys. Continue to still vote.”

Tim Grube agreed, “Continue to still vote.”

No matter where you live the bookings are often based on the popularity of artists. This could be the DJ Mag rankings but is also based on demands of the fans. It’s important to still vote but Tim Grube adds on, “get on your Twitter, get on Facebook. Just tweet. Tweet your favorite artists and demand them in your city. That works better than DJ mag, in my opinion. It’s the word of mouth and getting it out there on the social networks.”

Mike spoke further saying, “You reach a certain point in your career like Tiësto, Markus, Gareth  and Armin  and I don’t think it matters anymore to them because they have their fan base. They have their loyal fans.”

Tim added, “It helps certain artists.”

Speaking of asking your local promoters and artists about visiting your city the idea of a Coldharbour Tour has been talked about. Tim and Mike said, “We’ll eventually get there. Maybe do a bus tour.” So if you’d like to see any of these guys in your city take the time to get on Twitter and Facebook and mention it to them and also reach out to your local promoters as well about the idea.

The end of 2013 will continue to be busy for the guys. KhoMha shared the biggest news for himself saying, “Right now I working as well with a big collaboration with one of the biggest trance legends Cosmic Gate, so yeah it’s great.” KhoMha’s track “Hydra” is set to be released this month and he also said, “there is a new Coldharbour release (I can’t tell you the name of course). It’s going to be maybe at the end of the year.”

GHTRICKSTERADVERT1Grube & Hovsepian recently released their track “Trickster” that rose to number nine on the Beatport charts which was an accomplishment for them. Tim said, “It went in as four or five jumps” Mike added on saying, “80, then 40, then 18, then 14, then 13 and finally nine. I woke up in the morning and logged into Beatport and it was 14 or 13 the night before and I refreshed and it’s like top 10! Woo!”

Markus Schulz is releasing his latest city series compilation titled Buenos Aires ’13 and will feature three Grube & Hovsepian productions. Their own tracks “Trickster” and “Palermo” and the third is “Fair Winds” that they produced with Elevation.

Trickster was also remixed by Italian producer Gai Barone. How did two guys living in Miami connect with someone from Italy to remix a track? Tim Grube explained, “That’s funny we were sitting in the studio and decided that we needed something different. We play a lot of opening sets, like tonight and obviously we cannot play our 132 big room track Trickster. We leave that up to everyone else, even when we do our main headline set. We needed something that is our style that the old Coldharbour fans would love and we could count on Gai Barone because he has been on fire lately. Markus has been supporting his stuff for the past couple of years. There’s a track that just came out from him (Gai Barone remix of Danilo Ercole “Player One”) that we truly love and we wanted that kind of similar sound and he nailed it. It was perfect, it was great package, a big big room, a nice progressive trance track, deep. It worked out.”

Another bit of big news in the second half of 2013 is that after eight years Coldharbour Recordings and Armada Recordings are no longer affiliated. The two had been working together since 2005.

Tim Grube immediately eased concerns saying, “Fans don’t even need to worry, Coldharbour is Coldharbour. It’s still Coldharbour and Markus is still fully behind it. It’s just not Armada.” Tim added on more details saying, “And the thing is that we have to evolve a little bit. We want to do more different things that we weren’t able to do. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. So we wanted to expand a little bit and we were able to do that with Markus. He’s able to make us expand and make us get more on the radio. We want to expand in the states because it is blowing up here. Us taking more control and us having more control over the artists. We had to. It’s not a bad thing that we left. Nothing is going to change from the forefront. It’s just the back end internal stuff. The forefront is not going to change and the quality is still going to stay the same.”

Audio Cargo is another record label that was created in 2013 and Tim explained the label further saying, “It has nothing at all to do with Coldharbour. It’s like Armada vs. Black Hole. It’s totally different. That label Audio Cargo is fueled towards commercial radio tracks, vocals. We just signed a new Jonathan Mendelsohn track that will probably come out the end of September or early October by the Venom One guys. We had our first release which was Memory Lane on there. It’s not something you’ll hear a release from every two or three weeks like Coldharbour. It’s when we have a great great vocal commercial track.”

Stay linked up with Coldharbour (Facebook, Twitter) and Audio Cargo (Facebook, Twitter) to stay on top of all of their new releases.

Markus Schulz has often called KhoMha his little brother from another mother so we asked the guys what they considered him.

Mike Hovsepian said, “His older brother from another mother.” That got some laughs from everyone in the room.

Tim Grube, “He has many different names.”

KhoMha added, “Well you know, Markus is really important person in my life. There is a before and after an Markus in my career. He’s been an inspiration to me. He’s an awesome person with me. He not only supports me as an artist, but always he tries to give me good advice and something like that! He is really great!”

We mentioned what a great experience the Scream Bus Tour must have been and KhoMha added, “Yea, he is one of my biggest inspirations. It’s kind of awesome.”

KhoMha Coldharbour Night Avalon August 2013

What are some of the funniest things you’ve seen from the DJ booth?

Mike: Well tonight we just saw three or four guys throwing punches and a guy with a bloody face and security guards breaking it up. There were like five or six security guards.
Tim: Huge fight, right in front of us. We saw him get hit in the face and it was like… oooph! It was bad.
Mike: There was a big brawl out in the middle of the dance floor during one of the tracks. They just dragged them off the dance floor.
Tim: That was the craziest fight. But I think for myself it was when I was with Markus in Bogotá. Some fan took the whole DJ booth and pulled it out into the crowd. He was drunk. But it was the type of booth that was standing still but it went like right into the crowd. That was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.
Mike: KhoMha’s peeps.
Tim: Colombians. They party hard!

What are some of the strangest things you’ve had to autograph?

Tim: What haven’t we autographed.
Mike: Sometimes we feel uncomfortable because they ask you to sign certain places on their body. I’ve never done that. But we’ve been asked to autograph breasts before, butts.
Tim: You do it!
Schulz Army: There was a girl at TAO Beach that was proudly displaying her signature.
Mike: Sometimes those signatures turn into tattoos.

Do you ever compare kandi after the set?

Mike: I wasn’t that big on bracelets, but I’ve embraced it after KhoMha and Tim started wearing them. It’s a good conversation starter. People see you wearing them. They’re like what’s that? Cool!
Tim: I usually wear that (referring to #SchulzArmy), but I left mine at home this time.

But you’ve got the Unicorn Slayer one.

Tim: I always wear that. I wear that every day.
Mike: It’s his good luck charm.

For the last question we asked about the old Markus Schulz pictures that have surfaced from the 1990s and whether they pick on Markus about that or his old remixes. Tim Grube took the reply and said, “We have, but now it’s all out there. So it’s like the joke is like… okay. He always gets a kick out of it when he sees it. The memories that come back, where he’s from and all that. It’s always good to see that type of stuff.”

Embrace your past!

Review: Trickster by Grube & Hovsepian plus Avalon Ticket Giveaway

The time has finally come for a track to be released that we’ve been hearing in live sets for nearly six months. “Trickster” by Tim Grube & Mike Hovsepian is now available on on Beatport under Coldharbour Recordings and can be purchased here http://bit.ly/tricksterbp. It is also available on iTunes http://bit.ly/13BDlyO. The track was debuted to the world on March 1, 2013 at A State of Trance 600 San Paulo by Markus Schulz as an ID and quickly had everyone wondering which Coldharbour name had produced the massive track.

“Trickster” has been getting played in just about every Markus Schulz live set because it’s by his Coldharbour pals but also because of its unicorn slaying aggressiveness that is perfect for a peak time set. The track was also played during A State of Trance 626 by Armin van Buuren.

TRICKSTER-SCHULZARMY

Grube & HovsepianThe magic in “Trickster” is after the first build up as it breaks down and a snare drum sound takes over in the background and it continues to build again and will have hands in the air on the dance floors moving fingers to the beat. This is a song produced for peak time sets regardless of the size of the crowd. Any DJ who takes their time warming up a crowd can easily use this as one of those songs to take a night to that next level with a full dance floor.

Grube & Hovsepian have showed their versatility this summer with two big tracks, this dance floor styled “Trickster” and the more radio friendly “Memory Lane” featuring Vice that was released earlier this summer (read our review here).

For those looking for a more progressive style of music you will not want to miss the “Trickster” remix by Italian producer Gai Barone. You’ll hear familiar elements of the original production of “Trickster” but Gai Barone did what a great producer can do, come close to creating an almost completely different track. The Grube & Hovsepian original will have a dance floor stomping their feet while the progressive and melodic Gai Barone remix will have a crowd in a trance early in the morning. The Gai Barone remix debuted on the August 8, 2013 edition of the Global DJ Broadcast and was voted the Global Selection of the episode. The progressive style of the track is a perfect fit for the Ibiza Summer Session episodes of GDJB.
