Album Review: Markus Schulz Scream 2

After the huge success of the ‘Scream’ album, what better way to make another huge statement than to release ‘Scream 2’. I have to say everyone will be loving this album. Markus has made some amazing additions to the trance world with these tracks. Whether teamed up with some amazing talent or just the slayer by himself, each track will give you an in-depth view into the genius mind of Markus Schulz.

Let’s start this album review off with the track “Reloaded”. The beginning is great with an amazing melody that will just set the mood for the experience that is coming. This melody leads right into a very uplifting beat that seamlessly melts into the steady flow. Before you know it that beautiful melody is back ringing through your ears before dropping you right back into a fantastic drive. “Reloaded” is not to hard and not to soft but just right!

“Revolution” is a great vocal track that features Chris Madin. The way Chris sings these vocals will send chills down your spine. Just as you think this can’t get any better, Markus Schulz teams up with Venom One to create a phenomenal beat to accompany Chris Madin’s vocals. For me, I can see this played often at festivals to come!

“Blown Away” features Liz Primo and what can really be said about this creation other than, wow. This track to me is an emotional tugger and will really bring out the feelings in the listeners. With that being said, Markus continues to blow us away every time he shares his musical love with us. Liz Primo’s unique voice is a great addition and gives “Blown Away” a nice edge.

For me “Remember This” is one of my favorites on the album. I have been inspired by this track since the first time I heard it. There are so many great things going on here and from first hand experience this “Remember This” is simply amazing when heard on a professional sound system. I have used this track at my own shows and always get a positive response from the crowd. When your ears hear “Remember This”, it is like a signal is immediately sent to the muscles in your face that make you smile. Such a great addition to ‘Scream 2′.

“Erase You” is another favorite for me. Lady V (aka Victoria Horn) absolutely crushes the vocals and really brings a new breath of life to this track. After being dubbed the sequel to the “Stalker Anthem”, you really are told such an interesting story from start to finish. I found myself creating a music video in my head while listening. “Erase You” is so strong and direct that’s what I love about Markus Schulz and trance music. The way Markus and Lady V convey a message throughout this song is so skillful and precise, all while creating a masterpiece.

“Destino” and “Dancing in the Key of Life” have a very mystical sound to them from start to finish. They suck you in without you even knowing and I found myself really picking them apart and enjoying the sounds. Along with so many other of Markus’ creations, his sounds just envelop you and make every worry disappear and turn into enjoyment. These two are no different.

For “Lord Knows”, Markus Schulz teams up with Liz Horsman to deliver a mind bending track that includes fantastic vocals. From the first moment you hear Liz’s voice you cannot do anything but give your full attention to the track. As you set sail throughout the ups and downs, Markus transitions you slowly. This track gives you the feeling of floating in and out of reality in a good way!

“Fireworks” has a special place in my heart because two of my favorite artists collaborated on this track. Any music that has the name Klauss Goulart or Markus Schulz associated with it is always amazing. Combine them both with Paul Aiden and you get legendary. These vocals will literally grab your attention no matter what mood you’re in. Paul Aiden gradually leads you into a hard-hitting happy drive that will take over your soul. I cannot wait to hear this played at the many festivals coming up over spring and summer. Klauss, Markus and Paul have really outdone themselves with this one!

“In the Shadows” is such a deep track, it’s like Markus reached deep down inside, pulled that guttural emotion out and smeared it all over this. There is so much substance expressed within only a few minutes. It is amazing how this creation can really envelop you while still drawing you further and further in. I can only imagine a crowd reaction upon hearing “In the Shadows” at a Markus show. That big Markus smile we all fall in love with is sure to be making an appearance while this is played.

Adina Butar has also made an appearance on the album with “Muse”. Adina has a way of taking any track to the next level with her ground shaking vocals. When you get Markus Schulz making the beats and Adina serenading you with vocals there is no going wrong. “Muse” is a stunning song that really showcases both of their talents. This will have the vocals and beat marinating in your head long after the track has finished. Such a great addition to the ‘Scream 2’ album.

Markus and CeCe Peniston have teamed up on ‘Scream 2’ to create “Make You Fall”. This track has fun written all over it. The vocals from CeCe are very refreshing and upbeat, exciting you for what’s to come. Without a hesitation Markus pulls it all together with one of the funnest beats on the album. This is such a great dance track and will really make you bounce in your seat the whole time you listen. I love seeing this side of Markus Schulz and love how he expresses it!

Up until this point I thought I had picked my favorites, this all changed when I heard “Mango”. This track is amazing! The lead build is simply perfection and transitions so well into an immaculate drive. This drive is so hard and at the same time so different. The sound of “Mango” will immediately draw you in and spin you around in a trance wonderland created by Markus Schulz. No unicorn can fly fast enough to escape the slaying that happens from beginning to end. I can see “Mango” exploding onto the scene and taking over shows creating so many memorable experiences for everyone.

Following “Mango” is another strong addition to the album,”Mardi Gras”.  This track really comes alive for me during the midpoint. You just get lost in the synth and just keep floating away until the musical conductor, Markus Schulz decides its time for you to be reeled back to earth. There also is a point where you hear a hollow, almost echoing noise that is really interesting and not like any sound I’ve heard. Things like this and so many other high points within “Mardi Gras” really makes the track stand out!

“Gravity” featuring Amy Kirkpatrick can be summed up with one word, beautiful. Amy’s voice is so angelic and meshes so well with the foundation that Markus provides. “Gravity” is such a fitting name because that’s the only thing that will keep you grounded while listening. This masterpiece makes you want to grab your closest friend or loved one and just melt away together. This will be such an emotional piece for so many people and cant wait to see the love spread from “Gravity”.

“Reflection” is very interesting and has a theme feel to the sound and placement of everything going on. I could see this track being used on trance festival after movies and videos. “Reflection” really made me think while I was listening to it and before I knew it I was reminiscing in my head different shows I’ve been to and reliving why I feel in love with trance. Markus has subtly but efficiently created a track that will make you relive your love for music.

Last but not least, Markus Schulz and Rex Mundi have teamed up to create a great banger. “Towards the Sun” is very uplifting but at the same time makes you just want to move your feet. The title is perfect because with these two artists collaborating, heaven is not that far out of reach. Great job on this one!

Markus Schulz has opened up and let us into his world yet again with ‘Scream 2’. Listening to this album has been very enjoyable and I look forward to experiencing some of these tracks at the upcoming shows and festivals that I will be attending. I’ll be using a lot of these at my very own shows to spread the word of trance and how Markus Schulz is a constant positive influence in my life and others!

Markus Schulz’s artist album ‘Scream 2’ will be released today, February 21st!

“Muse” Lyrics:

When I first saw you
Your eyes were like shining stars
The whole world start spinning ‘round
My feet never touched the ground
I tried to reach you
You came and held my hand
Rain started falling down
Beautiful colors drew the sky

I can’t live without your love
I can’t live without your love
I can’t live without your love
Without you, love
I’m feeling lost and I can’t go on

I can’t live without your love
I can’t live without your love
I can’t live without your love
Without you, love
I’m feeling lost and I can’t go on

I can’t live without you, love, no more

Official Music Video for KhoMha – Hydra Released

After releasing the Hydra E.P., this trio of tracks have become favorites to many Coldharbour Recordings and KhoMha followers.

The first track on the E.P., “Hydra” has received huge support and is becoming a go to for many trance artists. What better way to celebrate than with an official music video. Enjoy!

New Music Review: Klauss Goulart – Absolute Chaos E.P.

It’s a welcome return to a familiar face for regular Coldharbour Recordings followers. Klauss Goulart carves an E.P. full of grooves, energy and catchy melodies. With previous bangers under his belt such as “Turbulence” and “No Man’s Land”, Klauss Goulart presents his first work for the label in over two years.

The first track on this E.P. is “Absolute Chaos”. This track off the bat starts with a nice solid beat to draw you in before fizzling out and turning into a driven mid section. The thing that really brought this together for me personally was the hollow knocking sound overlaying the synth, a very nice touch. The last half of this track has a very big room sound. When I dropped this song at my last show the magic happened all through out the track, but the last-minute is when the dance floor erupted. Klauss is right on track with this song and it came together perfectly.

Next track is “Legions (Original Mix)” which will catch the attention of the big room lovers, with a tough rugged bassline and an unrelenting melody boasting plenty of power. I have to say, playing this at a venue on a professional sound system sounds amazing. This track is the definition of a driving dance beat. It kept the club goers moving and smiling when “Legions” was played during my set. Klauss also throws in a true trance fell at the end of the track which shows how much talent is within him. Not only do I see “Legions” as one of my favorites, but I see this song providing many smiles for crowds in the near future. Once again great work!

The last track on this E.P. “Nayana (Original Mix)” has the most true trance feel for me. Such a great way to showcase that Klauss has so many aspects of blissful sound to give. The first time I heard this track was during Global DJ Broadcast and I feel in love immediately. This track has my favorite build of any on the E.P.  This is what I like to call a “Hands Up” song. So many melodic harmonies just make you want to close your eyes and disappear into trance heaven. I can only hope to hear this song at a festival to get the true feel of what a song like this can do to a crowd. I actually closed my show last night with this song and it felt like everyone was amazed with the sound and the heart put into this track.

The Absolute Chaos E.P. is a great showcase of all the amazing talent that Klauss Goulart has. This E.P. I believe covers almost every sound of great trance there is. “Nayana” is my personal favorite but with these three tracks its hard to pick.

Take a listen below and be sure to purchase the Absolute Chaos E.P. on Beatport or iTunes.

New Release Review: Markus Schulz – Remember This

Markus Schulz has delivered another fantastic track, this time under W&W’s Mainstage Music label.

“Remember This” has a phenomenal sound from the very beginning. The build in this track is short and sweet, leading right into the speaker crunching sound that is a surefire way to get people buzzing at any show or festival. You can close your eyes and almost picture that huge Markus Schulz smile as he watches the crowd erupt to this blissful track.

The mid portion has an inspiring and invigorating sound that will uplift anyone listening to this track. As much as I liked the first minute with the hard-hitting festival sound, the middle and end of the track drew me in twice as much. You can feel the passion that was put into every bit of this by Markus Schulz.

“Remember This” is already making huge headway and after one listen any trance lover could understand why. I actually played this track at my show on Friday night and the club goers responded just as I thought they would, smiling faces and dancing feet. Thanks Markus for confirming yet again why we all love your music so much!

You can now purchase “Remember This” on Beatport by clicking here.

Listen to the Markus Schulz at Stereo set and Tracklist

You’ve read Markus Schulz teasing about uploading the marathon set from Stereo in Montreal and he’s finally uploaded the entire seven hours and 40 minutes.

The word legendary is used way too often in many ways but when the music stopped just after 12 pm this marathon set earned that label. It was a journey into the depths of the Coldharbour archives full of Dakota tracks and everything else in between. There was a lot of twists, turns, trance, odd sounds and plenty of techno. This isn’t your typical two hour club set from the unicorn slayer. Prepare for a side of Markus Schulz you may have never heard before!

Interview with Markus Schulz Discussing BA ’13, Visuals, Schulz Army and More

The Schulz Army invasion of Stereo Nightclub was anticipated from the moment it was announced that Markus Schulz was going to be playing a marathon event at the legendary club, to the moment the event sold out in less than a week and then when trance fans realized that Armin van Buuren would be appearing at another club across town on the same night. Stereo Nightclub is known to stay open as late as the DJ wants to play and also for the fact that the club doesn’t oversell tickets and that the crowd expects music well beyond the current top 40 in the world of dance music.

Markus Schulz had mentioned leading up to his appearance at Stereo Nightclub that he’d be playing for at least five to six hours. He ended up playing for seven and a half hours from 4:30 AM until noon. You read that correctly, he ended at noon. After the typical high fives, pictures and autographs a lot of the crowd finally walked out of the club after 12:30 in the afternoon. Markus has teased that the night was recorded and he’ll upload it to his SoundCloud page. We’re waiting like everyone else to see if it’s just a portion of the set or the whole thing. Whichever it is we’ll be listening and sharing the moment it’s online. UPDATE: Scroll down for links to Markus’ full Stereo set broken into two parts, clocking in at 463 minutes, no cuts, no edits, just exactly how it went down that night! We’ve compiled a full track list: http://bit.ly/StereoMTLtracklisting

Our interview was scheduled for just before 4 AM but for a brief moment we expected the whole thing to be scrapped when Markus Schulz had arrived in the DJ booth with one of his good friends, Armin van Buuren. The club had erupted at the sight of these two appearing together in the same DJ booth, a sight rarely seen even at an A State of Trance event. Markus had been at New City Gas prior where Armin had played. After Markus took some time setting things up in the DJ booth he retreated to the upstairs for his media commitments while Armin was signing things and taking pictures. For those on the dance floor, we apologize for delaying the start of his set by a few minutes.

SchulzArmyMTL101413.3

Anyone given the chance to interview a veteran like Markus Schulz could spend an endless amount of time picking his brain about a variety of topics but with time against us we focused on a few things going on at the moment with Buenos Aires ’13 being the focus. When the Buenos Aires ’13 track list was announced the majority of tracks were unreleased tracks with a majority having never been heard before or known as an ID in a set, not an easy task to accomplish with 38 tracks on the compilation.

When asked about the process of picking artists for the compilation Markus said, “It’s a lot of the artists that I’ve been supporting and playing on Global DJ Broadcast.” So for any up and coming producers out there try to get your tracks onto a broadcast and if the sound is appreciated you may get asked down the road for an exclusive track.

“It’s not like a one month process, it was a whole one year process,” Markus said talking about what goes into something like this. He continued saying, “As a matter of fact I am already starting next year’s compilation now. It’s constantly working with artists and trying to envision the way you want the compilation to sound. It’s also working with artists to try to get that sound that it is that I hear in my head.”

Less than two weeks after the 2013 compilation the work has already started on the 2014 edition. No, the city it will be based off of has not been announced.

Another challenge is working with artists to keep the tracks unreleased. With a project like this you also want to try to keep the tracks from being played in a lot of sets so that they’re fresh with the release. We live in a world where music comes and goes so quick and it makes compilations like this something to look forward to with new music.

Talking about that topic Markus said, “Sometimes it’s very difficult you know. You’ve got these amazing tracks and you want to play it.” One of the tracks he mentioned not holding back on is Grube & Hovsepian’s “Trickster” which was three years in the making for the Coldharbour duo.

“I am not going to hold back on playing them, I am going to play them anyway,” he said.

“Remember This” is another track that was not held back on and debuted at Electric Daisy Carnival 2013 in Las Vegas and was an instant hit with the melodies. At the time it was an ID but a track that was an instant hit. The track was originally planned for Scream 2 but was given the push early and added to disc one of Buenos Aires ’13.

Buenos Aires 2013

A compilation like this can also be stressful for an artist and when we asked about the feedback so far he said that it had been fantastic while adding, “But you know the thing is this, I am really at a point in my career where it’s like I want to show who I am as an artist. And so you know, I try not to worry too much about what the response is going to be. I just want to be an artist and do things that I enjoy doing and I know that I have such a great loyal fan base, that they’re there with me. I try not to worry too much about the backlash or the feedback.”

Along with the unreleased tracks another big part of live sets is the visuals that are present in a majority of clubs around the world. There are in house VJs but there are also VJs who travel around the globe with artists. Since the Scream bus tour Markus has been traveling with VJ Infinight. Stereo Nightclub is one of the rare clubs that only has a couple of projectors and lights from the ceilings but as Markus said, “Some of these venues where we’re wrapped in LEDs it’s great. And Morgan has been traveling with me since the bus tour. I think it’s very important because with the visual I want to make a show. I don’t want generic visuals of shapes, and you know weird warping things. We really try to put together a show where the music and visuals are connected.”

SchulzArmyMTL101413.1We’ve grown the Schulz Army in big numbers over the past year so we had to ask about the presence around the globe with t-shirts and flags being present at places not only in North America but also in places like Beirut, Tunisia and Tomorrowland. He replied saying, “It’s amazing. You guys are amazing. Sometimes when I walk into a club I am jet lagged or whatever and I see everyone with the t-shirts, the flags and everything. It’s just like wow!”

A DJ will do everything they can to appear being tired and jet lagged and this just shows that showing signs of support from the crowd can give an artist the sense that they’re right at home with like-minded people ready to have a good time. One trend that has emerged in 2013 has been marriage proposals and weddings. Electric Daisy Carnival 2013 in Las Vegas married ravers for the weekend and also allowed people to get married at the festival with the proper license. At the Toronto solo set by Markus Schulz in June 2013 there was a wedding proposal during “Perfect”. Since then Tiësto was a part of a wedding in Las Vegas and another couple was married on the Groove Cruise while Markus Schulz played. Given all of that we asked if he thought about becoming ordained and he laughed saying, “It’s pretty cool. It just goes to show you how far this music has gone into people’s lives. Where they want the music to be part of special moments in their lives.”

Toronto and San Francisco are two cities close to us so we also had to ask about the idea of solo sets in those cities again. He said, “They’re all on my list. You know I definitely love doing those. Those are special cities that I always plan on doing long sets in. Whether it works out or not that’s a different story. But I always plan when I go to those cities to do long sets.”

Whether you’re in one of those two cities or anywhere else in the world if you’d like a marathon set find the local promoter who could make something like that happen and start building support for such a thing. Events don’t happen without the support of clubs and promoters who make things happen.

Markus Schulz was the reason Stereo Nightclub had sold out in less than a week so without hesitation we wanted to hear him get started and so did the rest of the club so we asked him about dragging Armin to the club and Markus replied with a smirk saying, “Yeah he’s here. He gets to hear some techno tonight!”

Here’s a brief glimpse of the night from the DJ booth thanks to kärl k-otik (a Montreal DJ):

Markus Schulz Welcomed Paris Hilton and now Justin Bieber

This will certainly get a lot of the internet outraged. Markus Schulz sent out the Tweet below shortly after 1:00AM on Saturday night welcoming Justin Bieber to the trance family. Wait, what? You read that right, invited the kid to the trance family! Good, welcome aboard Justin.

It was also just a joke and the internet erupted like you would expect it to have! Markus is not making a new track with Justin Bieber.

This isn’t the first time that Markus has sent the internet into a tail spin. In 2011 he also welcomed Paris Hilton with the following tweet (couldn’t find a screen capture but this is real):

Amazing party @SpaceIbiza. Highlight was seeing @parishilton jamming out. She is learning quickly what’s up! Welcome to the #trancefamily

The internet was outraged. The internet often needs to relax.

Tonight he sent out the following:

Markus Schulz Welcomes Justin Bieber

Please take a deep breath if your blood pressure just shot through the roof, it’s no big deal! Markus Schulz isn’t going to let any of these pop stars or attention craving celebrities change the way that he makes music. Invite everyone to the party to enjoy the trance music the world loves!

Dig deep into the archives of what Markus Schulz has remixed and you’ll notice he has a long history of working with pop stars a long time ago and here it is in 2013 and he’s still sending ravers down the rabbit hole and slaying unicorns without sacrificing any part of his soul.

Did you know that Markus Schulz is a partner in a new club that is opening in South Florida? Probably not because it was real news and positive news and that doesn’t generate as much hype. Read that story here.
