The Expedition and Apache Featured on Armin van Buuren’s 2013 Top 20

Looking back over 2013 and some of the most popular tracks there’s one that comes to mind that has been a dance floor staple for Markus Schulz and it’s called “Apache” by Fisherman & Hawkins. The Coldharbour Recordings track was released January 14, 2013 and hasn’t let up since. Another massive tune of 2013 was “The Expedition” by Markus Schulz and Armin van Buuren that was produced as the A State of Trance 600 anthem. The two tracks were huge in their own ways but it’s “Apache” that has been non-stop through the whole year.

New Release Review: Fisherman & Hawkins – Virus and Antidote E.P.

Dutch duo Isaac Vissers and Rob Koopmans have been responsible for some of Coldharbour Recordings’ outstanding moments over the past couple of years. After a grand entrance with Nightshift, they ascended to even greater heights with Apache. Now leading the way is Virusa track which may be familiar to trance goers who attended Markus’ solo sets throughout the summer season.

This track can be summed up as pure bliss! From the very first time you hear it, you are on a journey. The melodic highs will draw you into the sounds hiding within. Mid way through, the track takes a nice turn and presents itself with hard-hitting lows and that great build we all desire. At this point, I have to admit I wanted to get out my chair and start dancing.

Fisherman and Hawkins really did a nice job in starting subtle, and evolving the sound and beat all the way to the ending of Virus. The build throughout this track is perfect, about every 30 seconds or so you will hear a little more added to the original line. I have to say, the real magic happens in the last half of the track.

I will definitely be playing this at one of my upcoming shows and I am sure it will make the club goers as happy as I was to hear it!

The second track in the E.P. release is Antidote and you cannot help but to notice the long and light build. To me this means one thing, a hard-hitting combination of highs and lows is in the near future. When the drop kicks in on this track you notice the very festival sound qualities it has. Antidote is definitely one of those tracks catered to a large, powerful and clear sound system with a crowd full of people ready to party to trance.

By mid track when the synth sound begins, you can almost picture thousands of hands in the sky waiting for that hard kick to come back. It does, but for just a moment. It still has the nice qualities of the first half, but begins to taper a little earlier in the track than I thought it would have.

Overall I would say this is a pretty good track by the duo, but I also see this track as a remixer’s dream.

Both tracks are now available on Beatport and can be purchased here.

Review of Invite Only Event with Markus Schulz at Ruby Skye

Private party featuring Markus Schulz?  You better believe a member of the Schulz Army was in attendance!  The event was the Wargaming GDC 2013 party celebrating their 15th anniversary, more info about them here http://www.wargaming.net/

The crowd inside of Ruby Skye was pretty big by the time I got in around 10:30 but by 1 am only the hard core fans had not been slayed. As Markus’ set started many people in the crowd didn’t seem to know who he was,  it appeared to be their first introduction to his style of  progressive trance.  There was one guy who had travelled from Miami and missed him at Ultra and Mansion and was extremely happy to see him since he is such a huge fan!

Markus Schulz Ruby Skye 1

Markus played a two hour set with a lot of peak hour tunes and others that he usually plays at festivals.  Staples like Apache, Nothing Without Me and Loops & Tings.  Instead of going down the rabbit hole a rabbit appeared for a brief moment with an appearance of the song The Man with the Red Face.  Excellent saxophone in that classic track.

Markus got on the microphone at the end of his set and closed the night with, “Thank you guys for coming out. An amazing party tonight. You guys were really really great. Thank you guys so much. Thank you for having me and I can’t wait to see you somewhere out there.”

I got to speak to him for a moment (security was aggressive to get people to leave the club so he only got in a few pictures). I told him my tour de Markus had kicked off and he said, “Don’t get bored.”  Getting bored seeing Markus Schulz five times within 10 days is not possible.  I’ll also be at A State of Trance 600 New York, the Pacha after party, Bal en Blanc in Montreal and POP 2013 in Oakland.  If you’ll be at any of those events as well look for the Schulz Army flag at each location and say hi!

Some of you may be asking, how did I get into the event?  Showed up and got lucky enough just asking.
