Full Year of Markus Schulz 2013 GDJB World Tour Broadcasts and Tracklists

It was another big year of Global DJ Broadcast World Tour broadcasts as Markus Schulz played parts of or the entire set from seven different countries. Out of the twelve broadcasts there were two from Transmission in Prague and five of them from solo set nights (Los Angeles, Miami, London and Toronto). One broadcast from a boat, Groove Cruise. A trip to Johannesburg, South Africa. A Sunday night in Boston. A hot and sweaty event in Kuala Lumpur and an always wild night in Chicago.

Whether you were at one of those events or just listened to the broadcasts the voting has begun for the annual best of GDJB World Tour. It’s up to the fans to decide which city will win the honor of being this year’s best GDJB World Tour. Listen to all 12 of the Markus Schulz’s 2013 GDJB World Tour broadcasts, then cast your vote for your favorite!

Travelling Down the Rabbit Hole in Toronto with Markus Schulz

The rabbit hole is a time when things get a little weird and the music may get a little trippy but there’s no need to fear it. This past Saturday night Markus Schulz was given the reigns of the DJ booth at The Guvernment nightclub in Toronto for his first solo set and he played for nine hours ending just before 8 AM. The Guvernment is a venue that deserves legendary status and has been dancing until dawn for nearly 20 years and has hosted Markus Schulz many times over the years. There was a lot of asking, begging and pleading for this event to happen and it was well worth the wait. Read the back story here.

I have heard a lot of great things about the solo set and this was the first one I’ve ever been a part of and was worth the over three hour drive to enjoy it. Suzanne Welker Jurgens, a partner in Schulz Army, flew to Toronto from San Francisco for the weekend just for this event as well. There was also people we knew of who had travelled to Toronto from Boston, New York City, Washington DC and Montreal. This was a destination event.

Keith Patrick Suzanne ASOT 650 TorontoThe hotel of choice was the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto which is only a few blocks from the club and was filled with partiers going to The Guvernment as well as the Digital Dreams Festival that was also being held in Toronto that weekend featuring Tiesto, Dash Berlin, Paul van Dyk, Wolfgang Gartner, Richie Hawtin and many more. Toronto is an amazing city to visit and possibly one of the most underrated in North America when it comes to electronic music. If you’re looking for a place to travel to this would be worth it.

We met with A State of Trance 650 Toronto campaign during the day to pickup some original t-shirts they had designed for the night and to also get a glimpse of the shirt they had made specifically for Markus Schulz to give him that night. Every trance addict dreams of hosting A State of Trance event in their city and Toronto has been working hard to make it happen and getting everyone they can on board.

The club was scheduled to open it’s doors at 10 PM with Markus Schulz going on at 11 PM and then playing until closing time. We arrived at the club around 9:30 PM and quickly traded some #SchulzArmy Down the Rabbit Hole We Go bracelets with some people from Hamilton to be first in line. The doors finally opened, searches were conducted and everyone ran in the doors. Markus was already in the DJ booth trying to finish his setup and had an instant smile on his face as the dance floor began to fill up. He had flown in to Toronto after playing in Las Vegas the night before and probably had little time between travel, a disco nap and the setup.

The nine hour journey began shortly after 10:30 PM and didn’t end until after 7:30 AM in the morning and I would’ve loved to have reviewed the night hour by hour but the dance floor and music suck you into having a good time. An hourly review wouldn’t even do it justice, this is something that you need to experience if you’re a fan of the music. It was hot, sweaty and packed at times but it was to be expected with a set like this and also 50,000 people attending a festival down the street looking for an after party as well.

Markus began the journey with a progressive build up getting everyone in a groove and warmed up for the extended slaying that was headed our way. The crowd was cheering and chanting “Markus” as he set the pace for the night and it was clearly noticed on his face that he acknowledged the affection. The City of Toronto has been a special place for him over the years and was also featured on the 2009 city series compilation. The 2013 city is expected to be announced at any time. As the night progressed into what’s considered the peak hour material it featured Scream tracks, all of the New World Punx tracks and a lot of old school trance tracks.

There was also a special moment in the night during “Perfect” when the words in the picture below appeared on the screen and Julie said yes to the proposal from Chris. Chris had gotten word to Markus that he wanted this to happen and the two of them worked out details and it went off without a hitch. A perfect moment for an amazing couple from Montreal!

As the club started to clear out from those not in it for the long haul the rabbit hole began where as Markus always says, things get a little bit weird and trippy but not a time to fear. The rabbit hole featured staples like “Nothing Matters”, “Man with the Red Face” and of course “Rapture”. If you’d like to really get a taste of the music during a rabbit hole set listen to the over three hour mix recorded at Space in Miami.

The club has a side door that leads to a patio outside and at one point in the morning with the sun shining and the door open Markus got on the microphone and quickly said, “Close the door, you’re letting unicorns in!” One unicorn either survived the slaying portion of the set or entered the club during the moment that those doors were opened.

IMG_2042 (2)As the music ended towards the 8 AM hour there was still almost half of the club left cheering him on as the music wound down but he had to finish up since he had to get to Ottawa for another gig in less than 12 hours. Markus took the time like he usually does to take pictures, shake hands and sign autographs. The club cleared out and the zombie walk back towards the hotel began.

There’s few DJs in the world that can play an extended solo set like this and Markus Schulz is a master of the art. I had the pleasure of seeing Sasha and Digweed play an extended set at Twilo in New York City before it closed it’s doors and at the time I never thought anything would compare but this surpassed that experience. Once you’ve enjoyed sets like these the standard one to two hour club or festival set just don’t compare.

Sign me up for the solo set travel club!

Here’s almost 50 minutes of the final hour or so that he played. It’ll give you an idea but really doesn’t do it justice, you need to experience this.

Markus Schulz Twitter Q&A and Unicorn Hunting Techniques

Markus Schulz took some time on Twitter on Tuesday to go through a Q&A with fans outside of the normal Global DJ Broadcast time slot. There’s always a lot of great questions asked and great answers in return. Here’s a handful of things we learned during this recent session.

There seemed to be a reluctance for a while for Markus to accept the term unicorn slayer to which he replied, “I think the biggest thing for me was not to make people think it was a marketing gimmick. It was created solely by the fans.”

Best technique for hunting unicorns? “Lure them into a false sense of security then go in for the kill.”

An 8 hour set in India? Find him a venue!

San Francisco and New York City are on his to-do list to plan open to close sets.

About Electric Daisy Carnival 2013 in Las Vegas..

Schulz Army has two meetups planned, join the events and meet other members of the Army through Facebook!

Electric Daisy Carnival Saturday June 22, 2013 & Tao Beach Invite June 23, 2013

Tao Beach time slot – Expected to hit the decks around 1-ish. You’ll still want to get there early!

Do not expect a New World Punx main stage gig at the festival itself. Ferry Corsten is playing on Sunday and Markus is playing on Saturday. If there was any hope of a New World Punx show the answers would likely be a little more secretive or the question would be avoided.

How was his experience at EDC Chicago? “Fans deserve all the praise. How you guys were willing to party and support while getting soaked to the skin was unforgettable.”

He had a great time at the Scream Bus Tour stop in Buffalo and said, “I honestly think Buffalo is one of the fastest growing scenes in the US. It will only get bigger and bigger there.” That was a great gig. Buffalo might be known as a sports town but it has some deep roots in electronic music.

Toronto is gearing up for their first open to close with Markus Schulz on June 29 at The Guvernment. When asked how fans should prepare he said, “Sleep well and don’t plan an early night.”

Any classics during the Toronto gig? “Yeah for sure. In the later hours when we hit the rabbit hole I throw in the classics.”

Going to the Toronto event? Join our Facebook Event Here. Need tickets for that event? Purchase tickets here.

How excited is he about the gig? “Massively. I’ve longed to do a solo set there for years and years. Great venue and the Toronto fans are amazing.”

How late will he play? “As long as you guys want me to and plenty of you stick around until the very small hours.”

There could be a new Dakota track on the city compilation album if it is finished in time. He also stated that the last track he listened to was Markus Schulz presents Dakota – ID Test Bounce June 11 2013.

A New World Punx track was premiered at Ministry of Sound last Friday. Did anyone get a recording of an unknown ID? Markus stated it still needs some work but there’s a new track coming.

Who is the mischievous between Ferry Corsten and Markus Schulz? “Definitely Ferry. I am a good boy and would never get anyone into trouble #nolies.”

The big room reconstruction of ‘Remember Magnetic North’ will never be released due to licensing rights. Enjoy it in mixes and live sets.

His favorite KhoMha track is ‘Mind Gamer’.

If he could meet anyone past or present who would it and why and he stated, “Larry Levan. I’d ask him a million questions about the Paradise Garage NYC days.”

Do you think managers/promoters influence DJs to change their style? Do you feel restricted depending on the location? The reply was, “Not really. Location and type of gig are an influence though, you have to be able to adjust.”

Future plans with Justine Suissa? “I’d dearly love to. Wanted to get her on Scream album but couldn’t track her down. Door always open to work with Justine.”

Markus Asked, The Army Asked, The Guvernment Listened

Markus Schulz and The Guvernment Nightclub in Toronto announced in early April that Markus was finally booked to be playing his first ever solo marathon set at the club that was recently ranked at #22 by Dj Mag in their Top 100 list.

There’s more to the story than just a simple booking though. The story involves Markus saying that he’d love an opportunity like this, an online petition asking for it and a lot of tweets and Facebook posts asking the club for it. If you read enough tweets or posts on Facebook from fans to their favorite dj’s asking for a gig the common response will be, “ask your local club or promoter to make it happen.” That’s exactly what happened here and here’s how it happened.

Markus has played short sets and even as long as 6 hours at The Guvernment in the past but he has never gone the distance with a true open to close that a handful of other cities around the world have experienced. His last appearance at the club was for Labour of Love in September 2012 when he played for four and a half hours ending his set at 8am which is what really set all of this in motion. You can read my review of that set here.

His set from that event in Toronto was the Global DJ Broadcast World Tour edition that aired on September 13, 2012.

Markus Schulz Toronto 2009The Guvernment in Toronto was also chose for the 2009 city compilation based on his six hour set that year.

During that Sept 13, 2012 edition broadcast a question by Tim Gonzalez was brought up to Markus asking him about playing the deeper tracks he’s been known to play and Markus responded, “That is exactly the reason why they need me to play open to close. I can’t start off deep in the middle of a night after 2 or 3 DJs have been banging it out before me.”

“I could have ended it at 5, and would have been the wise decision after barely any sleep from NY the night before and playing in Montreal during the day,” Markus Schulz had said during a GDJB chat. “But I try my best to make the fans’ experience as best as possible.”

A lot of us had asked him more about this happening and Markus Schulz continued to say, “I would absolutely love if the Guv gave me that room or Koolhaus to play open to close. Might be worth you guys encouraging them.”

After I had read that I thought it was time to try and gather support for such a thing and get the attention of The Guvernment. One way to get attention was to start an online petition that gathered 398 signatures during the whole process. Not a lot of signatures but it created some buzz every week and sent emails to the club every time that someone signed off. This was spread every Thursday for months.

Was anyone listening to the constant emails? The tweets? The Facebook posts? They noticed.

In early March Markus had said that he knew talks had started with The Guvernment which was a great sign and that sometime towards summer was a possibility. And then things went silent. Just before the Winter Music Conference in Miami the latest word that was shared was that there were whispers but nothing else. It was time for WMC, Ultra Music Festival, Space in Miami, a lot of media, meetings, panels and of course the New World Punx events at A State of Trance 600 New York City and Bal en Blanc. In hindsight, I think that was his way of calming the buzz prior to those large events.

Fast forward to the April 4, 2013 edition of Global DJ Broadcast when this conversation took place:

Markus Marathon Guv Tease

The Guvernment had retweeted it which meant something was up.

Fast forward about two hours and the news was unleashed!

Markus Schulz Marathon Set Toronto Announced

The rest is history! If you’ve never been to the club before you can expect the typical large room with big lights, big sound and lasers that will send everyone deep into the rabbit hole late in the night. The venue is 19+ and the crowd will range from those just turning of age to those over 40 that have been dancing until dawn in Toronto since the early 90’s. The club will likely be packed early in the night but only the strong will survive beyond 3:00 AM. Will you be one of them?

Markus Schulz Marathon Set The Guvernment Toronto June 2013

Over 25 Things We Learned During Tuesdays Markus Schulz Twitter Chat

On the eve of the Scream Bus Tour there was a twitter question and answer session with Markus Schulz and just like the last one, below is a round up of what was discussed. It’s nowhere near as long but just as informative.

When asked about any surprises for Boston he said, “I have a couple of things I’ve been holding back on to debut on the tour.”

It was confirmed that the June 29, 2013 set in Toronto will definitely be open to close. The club announcement and flyer only said “marathon set” which had some people skeptical that it would be a true open to close. This will be the first open to close in the Canadian city.

Someone asked, on a scale of 1 to David Hasselhoff, how excited are you to finally be doing a marathon set in Toronto June 29th? Markus replied, “I ran faster than the Hoff in his red speedos when I found out.” Get that vision in and out of your head now?

How deep will the rabbit hole go in Toronto? The answer, “as long as plenty hang around then we’ll go deep as we want.” I’ve been to The Guvernment a lot in the past almost 13 years and it can get dark in the early morning hours. The lights go down and the lasers go on.

You know where he hasn’t played an open to close yet? New York City. He said, “that’s one of my top priorities to finally accomplish – open to close in NYC.”

Will he play until 10am on May 11 at Avalon in LA?  “As long as plenty of you guys are down to hang, then we’ll go as long as possible.” He also said that he’ll be playing at least 6 hours.

Didn’t get tickets for that Avalon gig? No worries. “They only sell half as presales, so get there early on the night and you can get in.”

On the topic of open to close sets he was asked about Ruby Skye open to close in 2013 and the reply was, “I owe the SF crew an open to close after Superbowl night. Got to make it happen.”

Markus will not be at Electric Daisy Carnival New York but there is a possibility of Electric Zoo.

Most memorable festival show?  “EDC Vegas last year was so unpredictable, but it was a night I’ll be telling stories about for years to come.”

Speaking of Vegas. Will he be at Electric Daisy Carnival 2013 in Las Vegas? I think it’s safe to say that’ll be a yes. He was asked if he may be returning and the reply was, “we have unfinished business, the wind will not win.”

How was the Chicago gig on April 5, 2013? “Amazing. Sold out and arguably best ever gig in the city. Can’t wait to come back and do it all again at EDC.”

All time favorite track? “Perception is very special to me because the original is my all time favorite dance track”

Favorite track of the moment, “ID – ID. He’s on fire.”

Favorite club in the USA?  “Impossible to name just one, but Avalon, Space, Mansion, Pacha, Castle, Ruby Skye, Marquee + Echostage all amazing.”

If he could collaborate with anyone in the world alive or dead who would it be? “The original Pink Floyd lineup.”

He was asked, how PLUR are you?  “I respect the hell out of anyone who takes time in their life to support me.”

How amazing was it the first time you heard one of your songs being played in a dj’s set? “It was surreal. One of my proudest moments was having my Edge Factor remix of Jayn Hanna’s Lost Without You on Expeditions.”

Was the circular stage at Pop2013 disorienting to DJ from? Did it help you interact with the crowd? “it was certainly different, but definitely a unique way to perform. Cool that you see different sets of fans on each side.”

Gabriel and Dresden Markus Schulz Pop2013

A New World Punx album? Markus answered, “Not likely. Albums are always very stressful to make and even more so when it’s not a singular vision. Want to keep project fun”

Another track with KhoMha? “You never know what ideas we might concoct during this tour.”

Biggest triumph in the past? “I would say probably breaking the Top 100 in DJ Mag because I never expected it to happen.”

Does Markus still break dance? “I do but I can’t do the complexity of the moves that the kids do nowadays.”

Weirdest thing seen in life? “There was a period where so many go-go dancers were falling off stage at festivals. It was quite scary!”

Seattle isn’t feeling any love from the Scream Bus Tour but Markus assured the city, “making plans for Seattle in the summer, you have my word.”

That’s all for this session! Thanks to Markus for connecting with every one of us again. Make sure to use the hashtag #ScreamBusTour and of course #SchulzArmy on Twitter.

Markus Schulz lengthy Twitter Q&A Recapped as he Talks New Tunes, ASOT, NWP, Future Dates, Favorites and More

There’s a lot of reasons we all love Markus Schulz but one of the ways he connects with fans consistently tuning into his Thursday afternoon Global DJ Broadcasts and chatting with his fans on Facebook on Twitter.  On Monday night he spent about an hour doing a random Q&A answering a number of questions, towards the end he said there was still 400 some tweets he hadn’t opened.  There’s a lot to admire in how much he opens up to questions but also keeps enough a mystery.

Not everyone is an addict so some of the questions/answers may seem obvious but he still answered!  Chances are you didn’t feel like clicking each conversation so just read below, I did all the hard work and there’s enough information below for a Markus Schulz Trivial Pursuit board game.

Want to try and get a picture, autograph or handshake from the slayer himself? Stick around when he’s done playing and get near the front!  This is asked often and the reply is often the same.  As long as it’s possible Markus always goes to the barrier/front of the stage to greet his fans.

Unicorn Slayer Name

Why unicorns?  “rainbows” (@NourAgha) Possibly the most amusing answer here!!!!

Where is the best crowd?  “Argentina is among the loudest.” (@FumoLetras)

How many tracks were played during his 12 hour set?  “The LA NYE one I think off the top of my head was 147.” (@dexteritee)

One other job in the world for a month, “probably running a radio station.” (@stewardsonshaun) That raises another question, how deep would the rabbit hole go in the early morning hours?

Staying focused for long sets, “you constantly have to read the room and gauge what the crowd wants. If you don’t then you’ll lose them pretty quickly.” (@sagarpchi)

Best city, club, or festival?  “Difficult to answer but to name a few – EDC, Nature One, Global Gathering, Transmission, Bal en Blanc.” (@EDMRAVECONNECT)

On the panel with Carl Cox and Danny Tenaglia at the WMC in Miami, “that was amazing. To be on the panel with legends like him and Danny T was very humbling. Don’t think it was recorded.” (@Cradelus)

New World Punx

New World Punx was named after the tune New World by Markus and Punk by Ferry. (@pourbrew)

What inspired them to start?  “We did a few b2b shows last year, Godskitchen Birmingham, TAO Vegas and Echostage DC. The vibes of those gigs really.” (@keepitplur)

Did their styles change as they combined?  “I think there’s part of both of our respective styles that meet in the middle and that’s why they work well meshed.” (@pourbrew)

On the motivation for the comics of the duo, “I started reading through some comics in the office and figured it was worth trying. Something new and different.” (@KSpencePhotos)

Ready for Montreal?  “yes! Love you guys in Montreal. One of the most special cities in our scene.” (@Sarahh_Sunshine)

Potential Tour Dates

A Toronto open to close set?  “Still whispers but very hopeful that it will finally happen.” (@zeeaziim)  To add on to this, Markus had played for about four and a half hours in Toronto at Labour of Love the first weekend of September 2012 in Toronto. He’s played longer sets before in Toronto but never a true open to close. A petition was started here trying to convince the club to make it happen and it’s slowly built some momentum.

Any Vegas dates planned?  “No Vegas news at the moment yet, but website tour dates will be updated as soon as there’s anything.” (@jsaunders_)
